About Me

Hello!

I'm Melisma, a mexican illustrator, editorial designer, hobbyist writter and endlessly-curious person.

I've been drawing since I was very young, making stories and little comics, but it wasn't until my last semester at design school that I realized I wanted to be an illustrator. This epiphany occurred thanks to a copy of The Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers I saw at a book store, I instantly fell in love with the book's charm and simplicity, two qualities most of Jeffers' work has.
I already had a considerable collection of illustrated books from my childhood but started to look for more and more books and more and more illustrators, with the joy of having found my path.
I've had many doubts along the way and I still have a lot of work to do, but there's no doubt I love to draw and to color and to create characters and universes.

About my work

I've illustrated one children poetry book, made pieces for art magazines, participated in collective projects with artists from around the world, given workshops and participated in workshops by other artists.

My inspiration comes from nature. Plants, animals and children, which I like to mix up to create fantastic creatures and whimsical worlds.

My main technique is digital, but I'm not into the too-clean vector-like look. I prefer my work to look very organic, with imperfect lines and natural textures.
